This whale was ginormous, he was grand and it was such a spectacle seeing this huge beautiful whale on screen. The survivors return to Nantucket and finally reunite with their distraught families. Especially in the latter portions of the film he does represent the sad tones and emotion pretty well and handles some very confronting scenes in a way that isn't too disturbing but also isn't sugar-coated. This was a lot of the time a very slow film, especially at the beginning where the first 20 minutes or so was very dreary and quite boring. Four men decide to stay, while the rest set sail again on the boats with hopes to find land. Scenes like this are nothing new and have been done in countless films before this, but they were just completely uninteresting and didn't really add anything to the actual story of the film. Actual confrontations with the whale in this film were few and far between but when they happen, man do they make an impact. Chase hesitates, and stares into the whale's left eye, as the whale stares back at Chase. It has pushed man to venture further and further into the deep blue unknown. The production shut down for a day and a half, expanding the shoot to 73 days, exactly as filmmakers expected. The two agree to put their differences aside, rather than risking their reputations by returning to port without profit, and soon, the crew kills their first bull sperm whale.
It doesn't really end on a high note, it should have been a short and sweet ending but it is dragged out a little longer and just ended up being alright. The dramatic action scenes were filmed and directed in a very frantic and chaotic manner that upped the stakes during those intense moments. The whale breaches for a moment, allowing Chase to observe a portion of his previously thrown harpoon still embedded in the whale's skull. There was one bit of dialogue early on that i thought spoiled how the film was going to end, but it was a very good piece of misdirection by the writers, if it was intentional. Nickerson relates that a ship was sent to Henderson Island to rescue the surviving men there, Chase continued sailing the seas and became a merchant captain, and Pollard led another expedition to find and kill the whale, but he was never able to find the animal and the ship ran aground off the Hawaiian Islands and he was forced to retire.
